Long story short

1
One of Australia’s big three

EnergyAustralia is one of Australia’s three biggest energy providers, serving over 1.6 million customers primarily across the southern and eastern states.

2
Solar and renewable energy on demand

Offering solar options and feed-in tariffs, plus a mix of green and old-school energy, EnergyAustralia is helping make the switch to renewables easier.

3
Top-tier customer service

With average wait times of less than four minutes and just 1% of customers calling in with complaints, EnergyAustralia sets the bar high for customer service.

4
Financial support when times are tough

Through its EnergyAssist program, EnergyAustralia supports customers experiencing hardship. It offers assistance schemes and access to government grants and financial counselling.

5
Giving back where it counts

From education grants to backing First Nations businesses, EnergyAustralia is all about giving communities the power-up they deserve.

Who owns EnergyAustralia?

Originally owned by the NSW Government, EnergyAustralia’s retail customer base was sold in 2011 to TRUenergy (a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based CLP Holdings who already had a substantial presence in Australia at the time).

Today, EnergyAustralia services more than 1.6 million customers predominantly across southern and eastern Australia. So if you’re in that neck of the woods, chances are good thatyour neighbour, the colleague you run into on the train, and your cousin’s best mate are all with EnergyAustralia. It’s no wonder the provider is considered a ‘tier 1’ retailer, otherwise known as one of Australia’s ‘big three’ energy companies.

What makes EnergyAustralia special?

Gets you help when you need it

If you’re in financial hardship, EnergyAustralia can help you get through it, with options for payment extensions or to set up personalised instalment plans. Through the EnergyAssist program, you could even get access to government grants, assistance schemes and financial counselling. All of this while making sure your energy supply stays connected.

Supports Aussie communities

Community-led organisations near where EnergyAustralia operates can apply for grants aimed at improving education, sustainability and resilience. The company is committed to building positive relationships with Australia’s First Nations people, from its reconciliation action plan to working with businesses owned by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to backing the Uluru Statement from the Heart.1For more information, see The Uluru Statement

Delivers top-tier customer service

EnergyAustralia has its finger on the pulse in terms of customer service. Over 2022–23, only 1% of its customers had called in with complaints, while the average wait time for callers was less than four minutes.2For more information, see Australian Energy Regulator – Annual retail markets report 2022–23 Adding to this, the company offers a combined supply of renewable and fossil fuels to support energy transition for customers.

Where is EnergyAustralia available?

EnergyAustralia offers gas and electricity services across Australia’s eastern states, from New South Wales around to South Australia. Unfortunately, they aren’t available in Tassie, WA, or the NT, and Queensland can only access their electricity plans.

What plans does EnergyAustralia offer?

EnergyAustralia’s electricity and gas plans range from a basic-level offering to ones that might include add-ons such as solar or locked-in rates for a specific period – each with its own features and benefits. That being said, what you see on offer at any point in time might vary, considering the fluctuating nature and demands of the energy market. This is likely to be the case with most energy providers, big three or otherwise.

You can still make an informed decision by asking questions like:

  • Are there any exit fees or late payment fees?
  • Are my rates going to be fixed or variable?
  • Will I be charged if I decide to move house?
  • What discounts are on offer?

How much do EnergyAustralia plans cost?

There’s no set-in-stone answer for how much an EnergyAustralia plan will cost you. Factors like where you live, what plan you’re on, and how much energy you use can all contribute to that final number. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t do a little guesstimating.

So you’re not just making a wild stab in the dark, it’s worth considering the standing offer prices set every year by relevant regulating authorities. The Default Market Offer (DMO) applies to NSW, South East Queensland, and SA, while the Victorian Default Offer (VDO) applies to Victoria.

Although these prices are intended as a benchmark for market, you could find that retailers like EnergyAustralia offer competitive discounts on them. Have a look at the Australian Energy Regulator for the current DMO prices and the Essential Services Commission for the VDO.3For more information, see Australian Energy Regulator and Essential Services Commission

Alternatively, if you want to save yourself the legwork, plus get some gas estimates (no standing offer prices on these, sadly), you can always try iSelect’s online energy comparison tool to see what you could be paying on a selection of EnergyAustralia plans and more.

What solar options does EnergyAustralia offer?

Since Australia has sunshine in spades, it makes sense for EnergyAustralia to have some solar options on their shelves. The business makes up 7.5% of solar and wind projects across the National Electricity Market.

Retailers like EnergyAustralia can offer customised solar plans that include the installation of panels and battery systems. Already have solar panels? You might be able to find EnergyAustralia plans with higher feed-in tariffs, which is what you get paid for any unused electricity your home generates and feeds back into the grid.

If you’re on the fence about getting solar panels but still want to give renewables a shot, you might be able to use a mix of traditional and green energy including solar. You could end up paying more, though.

When you’re comparing energy plans, it’s worth looking beyond just the initial savings. Consider factors like exit fees, long-term rates, and renewable options like solar and feed-in tariffs. And if you already have solar panels, it’s worth looking into a plan with higher feed-in rates to maximise your savings from your unused energy.
