Moving House FAQs
Who do you need to tell when you move house?
There are quite a few people and organisations you need to notify when you’re moving house. That said, some are more critical than others, and will need to be notified ahead of time:
- All your utility providers – gas and electricity, internet, mobile provider, PayTV are the primary utility providers you should consider contacting at least a week before your move. In some instances, you’ll need to arrange for some services to be disconnected and then re-connected at your new house. For others you may be able to request a simple transfer. Remember that iSelect can manage many of these services for you.
- Financial institutions – update your address with your bank, mortgage provider, credit card companies, and insurers.
- Other – compile a checklist to work your way through. This could include updating your details with all health providers, schools, loyalty cards and subscriptions, government offices and services, as well as your friends and family.
Updating your information with your insurers is very important since your location could influence your home and contents, and car insurance premiums.
What to do about gas and electricity when moving house?
You can contact iSelect to arrange for your gas and electricity to be connected at your new address. We may even be able to help you make a saving by finding gas and electricity plans which better meet your needs. We can even handle the time-consuming admin or organising the switch for you. If you decide to switch plans, your new energy provider will need to know that there’s clear and safe access to the meters at both properties. This way they can take meter readings before disconnecting or connecting.
Does contents insurance cover you when moving house?
Not all home and contents insurance policies cover the contents of your home during transit from one location to another. You should contact your insurer ahead of the move to check whether or not it’s included, and if so, what the requirements are. Standard requirements usually require you to use professional movers. On the other hand, there is limited to no cover offered for DIY moves. Professional movers may advertise themselves as fully insured, but this rarely covers damage to your home contents. You should always consider taking out some form of moving insurance if it isn’t covered by your home and contents insurance.
Does your car insurance change when you move?
All forms of insurance are based on risk, so your car insurance premiums could change when you move house – even if you only happen to move one street over in the same suburb. The area you live in, where your car is parked at night, and the total distance you travel each year all influence your car insurance premium. But if you move to another state or territory, there are other factors to consider too, such as compulsory third-party insurance (CTP). Speak to your insurer ahead of your move to safeguard against claims being denied, or having your car insurance voided. You can also compare car insurance policies with iSelect and see if you can find a better deal.
Can you transfer NBN when you move?
All major broadband and internet providers in Australia allow their customers to transfer their account to a new address. However, not all areas of Australia are covered by the NBN, so the type of internet connection and plans available to you may differ. As with other utilities, it’s better to give your broadband provider at least one week’s notice so that they can discuss what’s available at your new address, and ensure that the infrastructure is set up before you move in. If your new connection is the same as your current connection, you should be able to take your modem with you, and just plug it in at your new address.
