How do I choose a suitable health insurance provider?

Now they’ve got your attention with a sign-up bonus or offer, it’s time to see if that health fund can walk the walk as well as talk the talk. If they tick all your boxes, it could be a match made in health insurance heaven.

Do they have policies that match your needs?

If your health insurance is a poor fit, you might as well not have it at all. A good fit is a policy that covers your health needs here and now (with a little wiggle room for any future plans, like having kids).

If you’re young, fit, and healthy, you might only want a lower-tier hospital policy just in case. A few basic extras, like general dental and optical, could be the preventative health care cherry on top.

For older folk who suspect some hospital stays in the near future, you might want to take out a higher level of hospital cover. You might want your extras a little more fleshed out, too.

Could they help you save at tax time?

Tax time is hardly exciting (excluding those EOFY deals), but your health insurance could give you a spring in your step come July. Depending on your taxable income and the hospital policy you choose, your health insurance could mean you don’t have to worry about paying the Medicare Levy Surcharge.

How do they look after their members?

Sign-up deals are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to private health insurance and customer service in Australia. For instance, take a look at which hospitals and providers they have agreements with to help limit your out-of-pocket costs. Even looking at how easy it is to make a claim and check your annual limits could help you make your decision.

Don’t forget you can share policies with your partner or family. But if someone has different health needs, you can always stick to individual policies, too. You might even find you’re each better off with separate health funds (and can make the most of different health insurance offers!).

What are other tips to help save on my health insurance?

Health funds offer deals to attract new members, but short-term promotions aren’t the only way to help save on your health insurance.

Choose a policy ahead of your 31st birthday

If you purchase and hold hospital cover before you turn 31 (technically, 1 July after your 31st birthday), you’ll avoid the Lifetime Health Cover (LHC) loading. If you miss that cut-off and get hospital insurance later, you’ll have an extra 2% to pay on your premium for every year you’re over 31. And that loading maxes out at an extreme 70%.

Claim the private health insurance rebate

Did you know the Australian Government might help pay for your health insurance? The private health insurance rebate is income-tested, so you’ll need to earn under a certain threshold. But if you’re eligible (and have an eligible hospital and/or extras policy), you can claim the rebate up-front on your policy premiums or as part of your tax return.

Make the most of your extras

Many extras options make it easier to be proactive about your health, so getting bang for your buck means using those extras. Aiming to use your extras more regularly will also help you see if there is any fat you can cut from your policy. If you aren’t using it, it’s time to lose it!

Compare policies regularly

Setting and forgetting can mean you could be missing out on possible savings. Make a date with yourself to regularly review your health insurance to make sure it’s still a good fit. After all, everyone’s health needs change over time. And you might even have new family members to add to the policy.
