How does the NBN work in Victoria?
The NBN (National Broadband Network) is rolling out across Victoria. It’s bringing faster, more reliable Internet by swapping out old copper infrastructure for new fibre-optic cable. This means online shopping, working from home and streaming will all get easier with improved NBN Plans.
Where is the NBN available in Victoria?
As of February 2024, more than five million Victorian properties can access the NBN.1NBN Co – Weekly Progress Report 14 February 2024, p1 From Torquay to Mildura, Victoria is a state enjoying the NBN. Plus, thanks to planned upgrades, more Victorians will be able to access faster speeds on their NBN Plans come the end of 2024.
Which Internet speeds can I get in Victoria?
There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to Internet speeds. Faster speeds may mean higher bills, where slower speeds could mean better value for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
What NBN connection types are there in Victoria?
Knowing your NBN connection type can help you understand what NBN speed tiers you’re potentially working with. Depending on the tech your NBN connection uses, some speeds may be out of reach or you might be spoilt for choice.
You may be able to connect through the NBN via:
- Sky Muster: This uses satellites and is only capable of speeds on the slower end
- Fixed Wireless: This uses an outdoor aerial and offers slightly faster speeds
- Fibre to the Node (FTTN): Your old copper lines connect to a nearby fibre node point in your neighbourhood, giving you some of the speed benefits of fibre
- Fibre to the Curb (FTTC): The fibre cables come a bit closer to your place, like in a street pit, and your old copper lines connect up to them for quicker speeds again
- Fibre to the Building (FTTB): In apartments and multi-unit buildings, the fibre cables run to the building’s communications hub, before the existing infrastructure quickly transmits data to each unit
- Fibre to the Premises (FTTP): This is the full fibre experience with fibre cables running directly to your place and offering you the fastest speeds around
- Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC): Your existing pay TV connection or similar could be how you connect to the NBN and get fast speeds too
NBN Co isn’t stopping the rollout once everyone can get on the NBN though. There’ll also be upgrades to their tech to improve peoples’ connections to the NBN. For instance, many locations across Australia — and Victoria — are already enjoying the move from Sky Muster to Fixed Wireless. So, you might want to keep an eye out to see if your connection type is changing soon and you could change to a faster NBN Plan.
Is the NBN available in regional and rural Victoria?
Even if you live beyond the black stump in Victoria, chances are you’ll be able to get on the NBN. You might be able to do so through a fixed line connection, like Fibre to the Node (FTTN), or via other means like the Sky Muster satellites.
How you connect to the NBN may impact the speeds you can receive but upgrades could also be just around the corner from you. As of February 2024, many regional Victorian properties that could only previously access the NBN through Sky Muster can now get a faster Fixed Wireless connection. More will also be able to enjoy a smoother NBN experience as the rollout and upgrades continue.
What does the future of the NBN look like in Victoria?
With the majority of Victoria able to access the NBN in some way or another, it’d be fair to expect NBN Co to hang up their hat and take a break after a job well done. However, there’s still work to do in their NBN rollout across Victoria.
For instance, they’ve set themselves a completion date for mid-2024 to upgrade Fixed Wireless tech for extended reach. This will see regional Victorians able to move from a Sky Muster connection to something a little quicker. Plus, NBN Co wants to see Fixed Wireless deliver faster speeds for its users new and old.
The other big change announced by NBN Co in late 2023 was more Victorian properties moving from connections that use copper to full fibre (Fibre to the Premises; FTTP). As the top-of-the-line NBN connection, users can enjoy fast Internet speeds like never before. The aim is to have more than 10 million premises across Australia with FTTP connections by 2025’s curtain call.2NBN Co – Aussies ready for 18x faster NBN
