Who is Peoplecare? 

Established in 1952, Peoplecare originally provided Private Health Insurance for BHP employees. Fifty years later, their membership had grown and extended across more than 40 companies in Australia.  

But the biggest change came in 2006 when they opened to the general public. Now, Peoplecare has over 30,000 memberships covering about 70,000 people young and old.

A top-rated mobile app for your convenience 

If you’ve ever needed a fix of schadenfreude, reading the reviews of mobile apps has always been a great place to find it. However, you’ll be out of luck looking at the Peoplecare app. In fact, in a 2023 survey comparing 10 health insurers, Peoplecare’s app ranked number one for user experience and claiming. It makes it easy to manage your payments, check your Extras limits and submit claims whenever and wherever you are. 

Where are they available? 

While the company may be based in Wollongong, Australians across the country can become members of Peoplecare. 

What policies do they offer? 

Peoplecare offers a wide selection of Hospital, Extras and Combined Policies. They also have Family Health Insurance options so kids over 21 can stay insured until they hit 30 (nine years seems like plenty of time to pick a policy for themselves!). Even better, all Peoplecare policies come with Ambulance Cover too. 

How do excesses work?  

Your excess can vary depending on your policy, but with Peoplecare, $750 is usually the upper limit. Plus, they have no excess for kids under 21 and a half-price excess for day surgery. 

How do I make a claim?  

If you’ve just picked up a new pair of glasses or are enjoying that clean teeth feel, you’ll likely be able to use HICAPS at the provider’s office. Just swipe your membership card through the EFTPOS-style machine and you can process your claim then and there. 

If HICAPS isn’t available, claiming can still be super simple. You can take a photo of the receipt and submit a claim directly through the Peoplecare app or their online portal.  

For those that prefer the pen and paper approach, you can also complete claim forms and send them in via email or the post. 

How can I pay my bill? 

Okay, nobody likes paying bills, but Peoplecare tries to make it as painless as possible. You can pay bills through the app or online portal, along with setting up direct debits to save you waking up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat.  

You can also pay via credit card over the phone, or use BPAY. 

Can I access my account online? 

Whether you prefer your phone or a computer, you can use the Peoplecare app or online portal to manage your account, update your details and check on your limits easily.
