Long story short

1
Energy use monitoring helps you spot bill blowouts early

From mystery spikes to energy hungry appliances, keeping an eye on your usage helps you catch problems before they hit your wallet.

2
There are plenty of ways to keep tabs on your power

Smart electricity meters, provider apps, and home energy monitoring systems can show real time patterns, so you know when (and why) your usage jumps.

3
Smarter power tracking leads to smarter usage habits

Seeing what uses the most energy in your home makes it easier to tweak routines, cut costs, and get more value from powering your home.

Ways to monitor electricity usage

If you want to get a clearer picture of how your home’s using its power, you’ve got more than one way to do it. From basic tracking to full-blown setups, here are a few options that can help you keep a close eye on your energy usage and stop electricity bill shock in its tracks.

Smart meter

Smart meters record your home’s electricity data every 30 minutes, sending it straight to your provider. You won’t be able to see a breakdown of each appliance and how many kilowatt hours (kWh) it’s using, but you will get an overall view of your daily power usage. You can also set up alerts for any spikes when things start working overtime – like your air conditioner in the middle of a heatwave.

You’ll need one of these to take advantage of some of the other monitoring methods.

Electricity provider apps

Many energy providers in Australia offer mobile apps that turn your usage data into easy-to-read insights. These can show how your power consumption changes over time, highlight peak and off-peak energy cost periods, and sometimes give you a look into which appliances are costing you the most. It’s a slightly more detailed option to help you understand how to finesse your energy use and create a more efficient household.

In-home energy displays

In-home energy displays show your electricity consumption in real time, along with an estimate of what it’s costing you. It works by using data from your smart meter to give you a more granular look into your home’s energy usage. Your energy data pops up on your phone or laptop, often using colours or symbols to show low, medium or high pricing periods; it’s super handy for timing those energy-hungry appliances right.

Energy monitoring system

Home energy meters or energy monitoring systems are like in-home energy displays, but work a bit differently. These monitoring devices clip onto your meter and send information wirelessly to a separate display or app. Some systems also connect to smart plugs through wi-fi or bluetooth, adding usage data from certain appliances into the mix for regular real-time updates. Overall, these monitoring systems can give you hourly, daily, and monthly usage data, and help you see where any energy-saving opportunities might be.

Home energy management systems

A home energy management system is the most advanced option. It’s a hardware device installed in your home that lets you monitor and manage your electricity use from your smartphone or computer for complete control. You’ll also be able to connect solar panels, EV chargers, and batteries into the mix. This means you not only get real-time consumption data but the ability to automate appliances and even control when and how your home uses its power, like turning the lights on at a certain time or only using power from your solar panels during daylight hours.

If your home still has an old manual meter, you could be eligible for a free smart meter under the national rollout. This goal is to see all homes in NSW, QLD, ACT, and SA upgraded with a smart meter (with VIC and Tas already well underway), making it a simple and cost-effective way to stay on top of your electricity usage.

Why is it helpful to monitor my electricity usage?

Monitoring your electricity usage is like learning the shortcuts in Excel – suddenly everything makes more sense, and your energy bills start looking less like a bunch of numbers on the page.

Depending on the monitoring tool you use, you’ll be able to see real-time insights into what’s using power in your home. That means that at any given time, you could potentially jump in and see which energy-hungry appliances are zapping the majority of your power. It can help you cut costs and emissions, test out some new energy usage habits, and see how they’re tracking for you.

If you’ve ever opened a high bill and wondered who the culprit behind it was, monitoring apps and meters can help find the missing clue before it costs you an arm and a leg. It could even help you see the red flags of an appliance in need of an energy efficiency upgrade.

For homes with solar, electricity monitoring can help make sure that your energy consumption habits are at their best. Tracking after-dark usage can show where changes might help you get more value from your panels and rely less on the grid.

Monitoring your electricity could even come in handy when applying for certain government support schemes, giving you clearer evidence to prove your case and get the energy support your home needs.

Got the data? Now make your energy plan work for you

Monitoring your electricity usage is only half the story. The next step is to make sure your energy plan can keep up with it all, and with a better understanding of your usage patterns, finding a plan that matches your home should be as simple as pie.
