Long story short

1
Travel insurance for Fiji won’t break the bank

Basic travel insurance can range around $35 a day, while comprehensive plans sit at around the $70 mark. A small price for peace of mind.

2
Cyclone season could throw an unexpected spanner in the works

Fiji’s wet season (between November and April) can bring cyclones and flooding, which could mean road closures and cancellations.

3
Keep your belongings and bank cards close

Petty theft and ATM skimming can happen in popular tourist spots. If something goes missing, travel insurance can help replace it.

Do I need travel insurance for Fiji?

A Fiji getaway should be about sunset cruises, lazy beach days, and watching meke performances – not worrying about lost luggage or cancelled day trip adventures.

Travel insurance is there to cover the what-ifs on your South Pacific trip, from flight cancellations to coral cuts that need more than just a band-aid. While it’s not a legal must-have, travel insurance is a smart move to make. It means the only surprises on your trip will be the good ones, like spotting a sea turtle or trying rourou for the first time (and loving it), not a hefty hospital bill.

Fiji is made up of more than 300 islands, which means there’s plenty to do on land and at sea. If you’re looking for an adrenaline-filled adventure or a relaxing ocean view, there’s an activity to keep everyone happy.

Snorkel in a real-life aquarium

Fiji’s warm, clear waters are teeming with life, from tiny clownfish to graceful manta rays! If you’re snorkelling off the beach or out on a boat tour, you’ll want to make sure it’s included in your cover – just in case those fish get a little too friendly.

Dive under the sea in Fiji waters

Known as the soft coral capital of the world, Fiji’s six diving regions are full of bright and colourful marine life, with around 1,200 species of fish. For the adrenaline seeker, you can even go diving with sharks. Just make sure diving’s included in your plan before playing a game of tag with these sharp-toothed swimmers.

Cruising Fiji’s sandy beach islands and emerald waters

From sunset cruises to multi-day sailing adventures out to Kadavu, Fiji’s white-sand beaches and emerald waters are best explored by boat. Just make sure you’re covered for private or chartered sailing before setting off.

Ride the waves off Fiji’s coast and islands

Whether you want to ride the waves for the first time or you’re a seasoned kahuna heading to Cloudbreak (home of the 2025 World Surfing League finals), Fiji has a variety of waves for all levels and boards. If you want the chance to ride the same waves as some of the world’s best, make sure it’s covered in your policy.

Are there any health and safety risks to consider when travelling to Fiji?

It’s not all sipping cocktails and lazy beach days – like any destination, Fiji has a few things that Aussie travellers should be mindful of.1For more information, see Smartraveller – Fiji

Air-borne illness

Fiji has some risk of mosquito-borne illnesses such as zika and dengue fever. While there’s no mandatory vaccination, covering up and using insect repellent can help you keep the mozzies at bay. It’s also a good idea you stay up to date with routine vaccines and ask about any additional vaccines you can take.

Cyclone season

From November to April, cyclones can bring heavy rain and flooding, particularly to downtown Nadi and the Coral Coast. All this wet season rain can block off roads (including to the airport), so make sure to stay alert and updated to local news, and don’t drive through flood waters or swim in affected waterways.

Theft and crime

Popular tourist areas like Suva and Nadi, including Colo-i-Suva and nature park trails, are more likely to see theft and pickpockets. Robberies, thefts, and assaults are more likely to occur in urban areas at night, so be cautious when walking around late at night and make sure to keep bags and valuables out of sight in vehicles and only take what you need out with you.

What does travel insurance to Fiji include?

What is and isn’t included in your Fiji travel insurance depends on your provider and the level of cover you need. But there are a few common things you can find across a range of travel insurance plans for Fiji. These can include:

  • medical expenses (like hospital stays or medical evacuation from remote islands)
  • trip cancellation costs (like a sudden flight change)
  • personal liability
  • cover for lost luggage and personal items (like your phone)
  • natural disasters (like flash flooding or a freak cyclone).

What does travel insurance to Fiji not cover?

Just like all insurance policies, there are bound to be a range of exclusions. Whether it’s just not included or only available as an add-on, you should make sure you know exactly what you aren’t covered for. This could include:

  • leaving your stuff unattended (if your bag disappears at the beach, it’s on you)
  • travel booking errors (like accidentally booking your hotel on the wrong day)
  • accidents involving reckless behavior (like having way too much kava)
  • certain high-risk sports or activities (like mountaineering or diving with an unqualified guide).

How much does travel insurance for Fiji cost?

Skipping travel insurance might seem like an easy way to save, but it could cost you big time in a worst-case scenario. Most Aussies heading to Fiji can find quotes ranging from $35 per day for basic plans to around $70 per day for comprehensive offers. The exact price of your travel insurance will depend on things like your age, trip length, what’s covered, and the provider you choose, so don’t take these estimates as gospel.

‘We went to Mana Island in Fiji for our honeymoon. And honestly, Fiji is as beautiful as people say – the water was crystal clear and warm like you’re walking into a giant bath. Being a land dweller, I’m not that confident in water, but we still spent most of our days island hopping, snorkeling, and having naps on the beach. It’d have been rude not to!
