What rebates are available for solar in WA?

In WA, 45.76% of all homes are soaking up the sun with solar power, and it’s easy to see why.3Solar Calculator – Solar panel install statistics in Australia. Data retrieved February 2025 Solar-powered homes not only get the advantage of cashing in on the sun’s free power, but they could also be eligible for a little added rebate or incentive on top, to sweeten the deal.

Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES)

The SRES is a cash-back perk for making your home a bit greener. Install rooftop solar, a solar water heater, or an air-sourced heat pump, and you’ll get a discount up-front.

For every megawatt hour of renewable energy your setup is predicted to create, you’ll get one small-scale technology certificate (STC), which equals some money back. The exact amount of your rebate will depend on your system size, location, and the STC value at the time.

The good news? You’ll still get STCs no matter whether you’re installing a new system or just upgrading it. Your accredited solar installer will handle the STCs for you and apply them to your quote without you needing to lift a finger.

Switch Your Thinking program

For those in Perth, the Switch Your Thinking (SYT) program is another way to lighten the load on your solar costs. This program offers a 15% discount on residential solar batteries, a $300 discount on all solar batteries, and a $200–300 discount on hybrid inverters and solar systems.

Is it worth getting solar in WA?

Perth isn’t just the sunniest capital in Australia; it’s pretty much a solar goldmine. It might not be the ideal spot for big wind farms and hydro projects compared to, say, Victoria, but when the sun is always showing up to do its work, it makes solar all the more worth it.

So, is it worth jumping over to solar power? That really depends on you. If you like the idea of reducing emissions, potentially lowering your bills, or making the most of daytime power, solar could be your perfect match, but it’ll differ from one home to another.

To help you make your decision, let’s crunch some numbers and see how solar might stack up for you. A standard 6.6 kW solar panel system (a popular choice in many WA homes) could set you back about $8,500. While the exact subsidy will differ slightly, the average rebate for a Perth home is usually around $2,160, which should cover about 30% of your costs.

Once your panels start soaking up those rays, the savings will start coming in – especially if you have a feed-in tariff or a solar battery. When you think about these long-term savings, your system could pay for itself in just a few years. After that, it’s all savings and sunshine.

Did you know the sunlight the earth receives in one hour is realistically enough to power the entire globe for a year? Crazy, right?

Unfortunately, your house won’t get quite that much power. If you want to make the most of your solar panels, it’s all about timing. Using more of your solar energy during peak sunshine hours (known as self-consumption) means less reliance on the grid and a potentially smaller bill for you. Typically, the best times to use up your solar energy are between 10 am and 4 pm during summer and 11 am and 2 pm in winter.

What are some other ways solar can save me money?

Solar panels are a great choice for households that want to lower their consumption from the main grid and harness the free power of the sun. Using power straight from the sun instead of the main grid can mean savings on your bills.

For extra savings, you might benefit from a feed-in tariff. This means you’ll be paid by energy providers to feed your leftover solar energy back into the main grid.

But if you want to go that extra mile, a solar battery can take your home to the next level. A solar battery stores up unused power for you to use when the sun’s clocked out for the day – kinda like going off-grid without moving to the middle of nowhere. So, if there’s lots of strain on the grid on a hot summer night or you just want to use your hard-earned solar power after you were out at the beach all day, your solar battery gives you a bit more freedom from the main grid.

Keep in mind that while solar panels deliver instant environmental benefits, they’re a long-term financial investment. You won’t see massive financial wins overnight, but over time, those sunny days will pay off in a big way – for both your wallet and the planet.

Ready to turn sunshine into savings?

Why let all that WA sunshine go to waste? Even if you can’t take advantage of those solar rebates, you could still be up for some potential savings by comparing your electricity plan.
