Spring allergy sufferers lose sleep and miss work as hay fever season hits hard
Research reveals the cost of seasonal allergies as pollen and bushfire smoke concerns grow1Source: iSelect commissioned PureProfile to conduct an online survey during July 2026. The sample size is n=1,020.
Spring has arrived, but for many Aussies, warmer weather and flowering gardens also signal the return of hay fever season.
New research from comparison service iSelect has found seasonal allergies are taking a toll on Aussies’ wellbeing, with almost one in five sufferers (19%) reporting disrupted sleep as one of the biggest impacts on their daily life.
While 22% say it’s only a minor inconvenience, 23% report being less productive at work and/or having to take sick days due to spring allergies.
iSelect’s Sophie Ryan said the findings also reveal nearly one in five (19%) have had their outdoor plans affected and/or they’ve cancelled social outings altogether, highlighting that hay fever is far more than a seasonal inconvenience.
“People often think of hay fever as a few sniffles and sneezes, but our research shows it can have a real impact on daily life,” Sophie said.
“Sleep disruption was one of the most common issues reported by allergy sufferers, and when you are not getting enough quality sleep, it can affect everything from your productivity at work to your ability to make the most of the warmer weather.”
As spring pollen levels rise across many parts of the country, many sufferers are adjusting their routines to manage symptoms, with over-the-counter medications remaining the most popular form of relief.
This year, hay fever sufferers may also face an added challenge, with bushfire smoke expected to affect air quality in some regions.
Health authorities warn smoke can irritate the airways and worsen symptoms for people living with allergies, asthma and other respiratory conditions.22Sources: https://asthma.org.au/triggers/hay-fever-and-pollen/; https://asthma.org.au/triggers/smoke-bushfires-woodfires-and-wood-heaters/
Smoke can also travel long distances, meaning communities far from active bushfires may still experience poor air quality.
Sophie explained that for some Aussies, spring can bring a double hit of pollen and bushfire smoke.
“People with hay fever and other respiratory conditions should keep an eye on local pollen forecasts and air quality alerts so they can take steps to manage their symptoms and reduce exposure when conditions are poor,” Sophie said.
“September is also a timely reminder for Aussies to review their private health insurance and extras cover.”
“Depending on your policy, some Aussies may be able to claim benefits towards eligible non-PBS allergy medications, specialist consultations or treatments used to manage allergy-related conditions.”3[3]Sources: https://www.nib.com.au/help/health/claim-pharmaceutical-prescriptions; https://www.bupa.com.au/health-insurance/understanding-your-health-cover/pharmacy-frequently-asked-questions#headerb26615b9-be42-406c-90cd-bbc53595ead6; https://healthhub.hif.com.au/general-medical/seasonal-allergy-and-asthma-solutions-in-australia
Taking a few minutes to understand what is included in your cover before symptoms flare can help avoid unexpected healthcare costs and ensure you are getting value from your policy.”
