Various levels of cover are available

Does car insurance for women exist?
So you’ve been thinking about protecting your car, and found yourself wondering: is ‘women’s car insurance’ even a thing?
Well, the short answer is no. There are no female-only car insurance policies for sale in Australia so it’s not really its own separate product.
But there are some car insurance companies that may be better suited to female drivers, and some policies that come with features that can be super handy for women.
The good news is that the perception that women are safer drivers – whether accurate or not – can sometimes mean lower premiums. And if the main policyholder’s a bit older, that’s another reason the costs might drop. For instance, your Aunty Sue’s insurance premium might be lower than your niece Sienna’s who is fresh out of uni, even though they’re both driving exactly the same car model.
If you’re crunching the numbers and reckon you can snag some features that suit you, plus lock in a decent premium, then looking for a car insurance policy tailored for women could be a smart move.
Why do women sometimes pay less for car insurance?
Insurance premiums are assessed based on risk. Contrary to what your dad might think, statistically at least, women are safer drivers. Yup, all that data about who crashes more, who speeds, and who’s more likely to drive high-powered, accident-prone cars often show that male drivers are bigger risks on our roads.

When you think about it, it does make a lot of sense.
- Women are less likely to speed or cop a traffic fine.
- When crashes happen, women tend to cause less severe damage.
- Men are more likely to drive hoon-mobiles that can cost a bomb to repair.2Centre for Accident Research & Road Safety – Queensland – Identifying approaches to address the hoon behaviours of drivers in local communities and any newly identified motivations behind the behaviour
Don’t go popping champagne just yet though – being female won’t automatically mean you’ll pay less than your brother or boyfriend. Your actual premium depends on a heap of things, like the car you’ve got, how you use it, and even where you park.
But if you’re a decent driver, there’s a good chance you might see a lighter hit to your wallet compared to the lads.
What are some features of car insurance that are suitable to women?
While there’s nothing seriously gender-specific about car insurance policies, some extras can help make women’s lives easier. Whether you’re juggling work, family, or a busy social life, here are a few box-tickers to look out for:
Baby gear cover
Ever bought a baby car seat or capsule? They’re not cheap. If you’ve got little tackers, some insurers cover baby seats and other items such as prams and strollers if they’re damaged in a car accident. Worth every cent if it avoids another trip to Baby Bunting.
Pay as you drive policies
Are you a SAHM (stay-at-home mum)? Remote working? Prefer walking down to the local café instead of driving? If you’re not clocking big kilometres, then pay as you drive car insurance could help save you some cash.
Domestic violence support
It’s tough discussing this, but it’s important. If your car is damaged in a domestic violence situation, some insurers waive your excess as long as it’s reported to the police.
Hire-car benefits
You’ve been juggling meetings and school pick-ups but your cars in the repair shop after an accident. With a hire car included as an optional extra on your policy, you’ll still be on the move.
Emergency transport and accommodation
Stranded? Far from home after an accident? Some policies will cover your transport back home. That kind of peace of mind can be worth its weight in gold, especially if you’ve got the kids in tow.
What are the different car insurance coverages available?
Compulsory third party insurance
To legally drive in Straya, you must have compulsory third party (CTP) insurance that covers injuries to others in an accident you’re involved in. It’s usually included in your rego costs, except in NSW where it’s called a Green Slip and paid separately. This level of coverage may not protect you from damage to property or your car.
Third-party property
Third-party property can cover damage you do to someone else’s car (or even house) as well as any potential legal costs. But it won’t protect you from footing hefty bills from the mechanic for your own car. It’s an affordable option – great if you’ve got an older car and a tight budget.
Third-party fire and theft
It can cover damage to other people’s stuff as well as your car in the case of fire or theft. But keep in mind, if you crash and it’s your fault, your car will not be covered.
Comprehensive cover
This one’s got the most coverage out of the lot. Comprehensive car insurance can cover repairs or replacements for your car (and can also cover the repair of the other driver’s if you’re at fault). This coverage also offers protection from theft, vandalism, and natural disasters. It’s more expensive, but if you like a much lighter mental load, it’s probably worth it.
Helpful tip:

When picking the right car insurance, it can feel like a juggling act between the coverage you want, and the coverage you can afford.
Now I’m the first to admit I’m not the world’s greatest driver (and don’t even ask about my parking skills, or lack thereof). Unsurprisingly, I have gotten into my fair share of minor scrapes and bingles.
That’s why for me, the peace of mind of comprehensive cover is worth every cent. As a busy working mum with two young boys, I rely on my car for school pickups, swimming lessons, Auskick, birthday parties and everything in between.
Recently, another school mum sideswiped my car and because I wasn’t at fault, my insurer provided us with a hire car while ours was being repaired. So I could continue to provide my ‘Mum’s taxi’ service uninterrupted!

Do women really need ladies car insurance?
Not really. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take a good look at the extras and features different insurers offer. A lot of the optional extras available these days can come in super handy for women – whether you’re a busy parent, commuting to work, or unfortunately caught in the middle of domestic violence.
The trick is tailoring your policy to your lifestyle so it can work hard for you, not the other way around.
Compare car insurance for women
While ‘female car insurance’ isn’t a product on its own, women can often score a bit of a discount thanks to their rep as safer drivers.
It makes a lot of sense to keep an eye on your options and consider exploring policies. At the end of the day, it’s about potentially saving your dosh and staying covered.
