The common lies Aussies tell car insurers

Aussies admit the lies they tell car insurers in the hope of lower premiums

They say ‘honesty is the best policy,’ but does this principle still stand when it comes to insurance?

According to new research by car comparison service iSelect, around one in 20 Aussie drivers have lied on their car insurance application, in a risky move to secure lower premiums.

The survey asked more than 3,000 people about their habits behind the wheel, and found that underestimating annual mileage, lying about where they park overnight, and how their vehicle is used were the top three fibs for those who admit to providing dishonest details.

While these details may seem minor, providing inaccurate or misleading information to an insurer can lead to serious—and often costly—consequences, including denied claims, policy cancellation, and even potential criminal charges.

Younger drivers more likely to lie about their car insurance

There is a clear trend showing that younger drivers are more likely to lie when it comes to car insurance. The highest rate of dishonesty comes from the 18-24 age group, with 15.4% admitting to falsifying details. This percentage drops to 10.1% among those aged 25-34 and continues to decrease further with age. These findings suggest that financial pressures and risk-taking tendencies among younger drivers may contribute to higher instances of dishonesty.

New South Wales was the most likely state to lie about car insurance

New South Wales residents are more likely to lie on their car insurance application, with 7.9% of respondents owning up to falsifying information, the highest rate among all states. Victoria followed closely with 7.3% of residents admitting to dishonest information. South Australia and Tasmania reported the lowest instances of dishonesty, both had 3.7% of respondents admitting to misrepresenting details to reduce their insurance costs.

“While it may be tempting to misrepresent details such as your car’s parking location or annual mileage to lower insurance premiums, doing so can have serious consequences that may end up costing you more in the future. If an insurer discovers false information, they may have to cancel your policy, or you might have your claim denied – leaving you financially responsible. If you are looking to compare car insurance, you can go to comparison site iSelect to ensure you get the policy that best suits your needs.”
