Craftiest Countries

Which countries are the craziest about crafts? Which crafts are the most popular online? iSelect takes a deep dive to find out.

Whether it’s as a freelance, side hustle or just a hobby, arts and crafts continue to thrive across the globe. With videos on TikTok’s Arts and Crafts section commonly reaching over one million views, it’s clear that these handicrafts are still popular worldwide.1https://www.tiktok.com/discover/arts-and-crafts?lang=en

With this in mind, the home insurance experts at iSelect decided to take a deeper dive and find out which crafts are the most popular online, and which countries are the most craft-crazy. To do this, we looked at the search volume for 10 different crafts across 10 countries.

Here’s what we found.

Craft-Crazed Countries

1. Crochet

Topping the list for crochet is New Zealand, with an average monthly search volume of 882 per million. Across the board, crochet received a high volume of searches from each country within the index, though Spain fell behind, garnering only 269 searches per million.

Interestingly, crochet also placed as the one of the most searched crafts within the study, taking one of the top spots as most popular crafts online.

2. Cross-Stitch

The United Kingdom had the highest online interest for cross-stitching, with an average monthly search volume of 160 searches per million. New Zealand and Sweden followed closely behind with 137 and 133 searches per million, respectively.

Conversely, Germany reported the lowest online interest in cross-stitching, only reaching 15 searches per million.

3. Embroidery

New Zealand once again indicated how craft-crazy the nation is. It had the highest online interest for embroidery with 407 searches per million, followed closely by Australia with a search volume of 367 per million.

Italy showed little interest in embroidery, placing with a monthly average of only 36 searches per million.

 4. Knitting

Moving on to knitting, Germany showed the highest level of online interest with an average monthly search volume of 241 searches per million. Across the board, online interest was high, with both New Zealand and France placing slightly behind Germany, at 215 and 211 searches per million respectively.

Spain (23 per million) and Italy (26 per million) fell far behind the other countries within the study, potentially due to their generally warmer climate.

5. Painting

Placing with the highest level of search volume within the study, France takes top spot for painting, with 965 searches per million, well ahead of Australia in second place with a relatively smaller volume of 623 per million. The contest for third place was much tighter, with Canada (529 per million), New Zealand (516 per million) and the USA (504 per million) each within a relatively close margin of one another.

6. Pottery

France also placed as the most pottery-crazed country within the index, with an average monthly search volume of 211 per million. It seems that pottery is particularly popular in Europe, with Germany (184 per million) and the United Kingdom (176 per million) each following France closely.

Spain again lagged behind for pottery, only seeing an average monthly search volume of 63 per million.

7. Quilting

Quilting placed as one of the crafts within the study garnering the least online interest, with the top placement being New Zealand at just 70 searches per million. From here, the search volume drops back even further for second place, Australia, at 43 searches per million.

Italy, again, represents a large difference in online interest, with the nation garnering a very small average monthly search volume of just 7 per million.

8. Scrapbooking

France far surpassed all the other nations within the study for scrapbooking interest, with a monthly average search volume of 437 per million; more than double Sweden in second place at 192 searches per million. Outside of France, Sweden (192 per million) and New Zealand (154 per million), online interest tended to drop off rapidly, culminating with Germany having the lowest level of online interest, seeing a monthly average search volume of 22 per million.

9. Sewing

Rounding out the nations’ fourth top spot, France also takes the crown for sewing, with a monthly average search volume of 256 per million. As is the case with many of the other entries in this list, New Zealand and the United Kingdom each follow with search volume averages of 168 and 140 per million.

Spain once again reported the lowest online interest for sewing, seeing an average monthly search volume of 17 per million.

10. Woodworking

Finally, the USA claims its own top spot for woodworking, with an average monthly search volume of 78 per million. Canada followed closely with 71 per million, indicating a strong woodworking interest across North America.

This sentiment was not as prevalent in European countries, however, with Italy, Germany and France placing with the lowest interest in woodworking, with average monthly search volumes of 7, 9 and 12 searches per million, respectively.
