What makes Bupa different?

Bupa has been in the business of helping Australians prepare for life’s ups and downs for more than 75 years, and over that time they’ve built their reputation as a reliable insurer.

Great! But what can they do for you, exactly? Let’s take a look at some things they offer:

  • More no-gap medical services
Bupa offers more than the average insurer when it comes to no-gap coverage for medical services. No-gap coverage means in-hospital treatments where the costs are completely covered by Medicare and Bupa. For the 2022–23 financial year, 91.1% of Bupa’s services came under this category.1Commonwealth Ombudsman – State of the Health Funds Report, p19
  • Members First network
Bupa’s Members First network includes an extensive network of Extras Providers. With these providers, you can generally expect to get higher benefits – and possible discounts – for treatments on your Extras Cover.
  • Life Rewards
Take advantage of member perks with Bupa’s Life Rewards program! You could be eligible for discounts at restaurants across Australia, plus discounted eGift cards, cinema offers, and more.
  • Member Health Programs
Eligible members have a number of programs they can choose from at no extra cost. Nutrition coaching, home chemotherapy and osteoarthritis management are just some of the programs you might be able to access.

Of course, this is just the beginning. Bupa also boasts a decent selection of Health Insurance Policies designed to suit a range of budgets and health needs.

What kind of Hospital Cover does Bupa provide?

You can use Hospital Cover for your medical costs when you’re treated in a private hospital, or in a public hospital as a private patient.

Bupa’s got you covered when it comes to this kind of insurance, offering Gold, Silver, Bronze and Basic plans, plus a few more in between.

Generally speaking, the more coverage you get, the more your premiums will cost. Fortunately, Bupa provides a good selection of policies that can help you balance the cover you need with your budget.

What kind of Extras Cover does Bupa provide?

Extras Policies help cover the costs of medical services that aren’t covered by Medicare. These are your dental check-ups, physiotherapy, optometrist appointments and the like.

Bupa offers a pretty wide range of Extras Policies. You can pick and choose the number of treatments you want covered and how much flexibility you want in the Extras you choose. You can also choose how much money you get back on treatments. Cash-back amounts might range from 50% to 80% with Bupa-preferred providers.

It’s ultimately up to you which one suits, though it’s always a good idea to consider which services you want covered and which you can reasonably do without before you dive into anything.

Does Bupa offer any combined cover?

Absolutely! Although you can buy separate Hospital and Extras Policies, Bupa also offers combined packages. Now, keep in mind that these bundles might not necessarily be cheaper than buying Hospital and Extras Insurance separately. So you might want to compare the price and coverage of different packages and policy combinations to see what might be suitable.

How do I make a claim with Bupa?

It’s pretty easy to make a claim with Bupa. Many medical service providers, such as dentists, physiotherapists and chiropractors, have facilities where you can make an instant claim for your Extras Cover through a little device called a HICAPS machine. You only need to swipe your Bupa membership card there and your insurer will do the rest!

If your provider doesn’t offer this service, you can make a claim by:

  • printing a claim form and sending it via post
  • submitting the claim form in person at a Bupa store
  • logging into myBupa and filling out the claim form online.
