Understanding the different NBN connections
The first thing you need to know is that the NBN will make the most of three key technologies: fibre, fixed-wireless and satellite.
Once it’s available in your area and depending on the technology available, you may be able to purchase a speed pack that has potential to achieve speeds that are up to four times faster than what’s currently available on ADSL2+.
Here’s how different NBN connections work:
- Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP):FTTP is generally considered the best NBN connection as the fibre optic cable is fed directly to your home for a speedier, more reliable service.
- Fibre-to-the-Node (FTTN):With FTTN, the fibre optic cable is fed into a small box called a node installed somewhere on your street – this is then connected to your home via existing copper lines.
- Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTB):Perfect for those living in an apartment block, FTTB connects you to the NBN via a specialised node in the basement of your building.
- Fibre-to-the-Curb (FTTC): This NBN game-changer is similar to FTTN, but instead of connecting to a node that serves the entire street, it delivers super-fast internet to a dedicated telecom pit outside your premises.
- HFC Cable: A Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) connection is used when the existing pay TV or cable network is able to form the final part of the NBN connection.
- Fixed Wireless:Ideal for people living and working in rural areas, this option uses radio signals from ground stations to transmit broadband data to special equipment inside your building.
- With this type of connection, a satellite dish is installed onto your premises and is used to receive an NBN network signal from the Sky Muster™ satellite.
Who’s in charge of what when it comes to the NBN?
When it comes to delivering the NBN to your home, there are two separate entities involved:
The NBN wholesaler is responsible for:
- Building the actual NBN network
- General maintenance and keeping the network running
Your internet service provider is responsible for:
- Providing your internet or phone services
- Making sure your modem is working properly
- Installing your connection and providing support
